One of the greatest joys of my ministry is traveling the country with young people who seek a deeper relationship with Jesus.
Some time ago, I was blessed to speak several times at the Bayou Jacque Church of Christ in south central Louisiana. After teaching the adult class, preaching the morning sermon, and stuffing myself at a phenomenal potluck meal, Bailey, Tracy, and I started our 9-hour trip home.
The car was quiet and I was exhausted. “Hey, guys! We’re gonna have to talk or sing or something,” I said with a sigh. “We’ve got a long trip ahead of us and I’m beat!”
I’m not sure why young people enjoy challenges like that so much, but they do and these two did. Immediately, the atmosphere in the car changed radically.
From Mumford and Sons to Taylor Swift and Disney princess music, the car rocked with loud, sometimes annoying karaoke impressions. Probably the most annoying of all was Tracy launching himself into high falsetto notes as he joined Bailey in songs from the soundtrack to Enchanted.
I was awake!
Now pedal forward about 7 hours.
The sun began setting, then it dipped below the horizon. Bailey was riding “shot gun.” Sensing that my energy was fading right along with the setting sun, she took her job to another level. More crazy singing, more crazy head bobbing, and then she did something totally unexpected. She reached up and, without warning, snapped on all the interior lights.
Ahhh! Blinding light!
Ahhh! Where’s the road?!
Ahhh! I’m awake! I’m awake!
Crazy girl!!
I guess it was somewhere between North Little Rock and Searcy that my favorite moment happened. The car was semi-quiet when Bailey looked my way and said, “Hey, Brother Sonny! Are you Premillennial or are you Amillennial? You know, the book of Revelation and the end of the world. That stuff.”
Oh yeah! Talkin’ Bible! Now that’s something that can keep me awake!
Anywho, to make a long story short, we made it back to Paragould around 10:30 p.m. There were no accidents and there was no damage done to persons or vehicle. Well, no damage except for those moments of temporary blindness every time Bailey surprised me with the light show! We were exhausted, but we made it! (Note: Don’t tell Tracy and Bailey, but all in all it was a really great trip!)
Conclusion:
This is my life and I am so thankful God allows me to live it!!
Devotional
John 8:12 (NIV) “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Sometimes light can be painful. Sometimes it can startle us into a different frame of mind. This is especially true when our eyes have grown accustomed to the darkness. Stay alert! Keep the lights on!
